UNSHAKABLE COMMITMENT!

commitm ent
c. 1948:
To emotionally or
morally engage.
A pledge to do
something, promise,
to bind, vow, give
your word

Becoming a serious athlete requires a serious commitment. In fact, anything that is a great achievement—college degree, successful career, strong marriage and family—requires unshakable commitment.

COMMITMENT KEYS

1. PATIENCE
Patience means to suffer and endure. Anything you commit to that is an
achievement will require perseverance and patience. Can you do the work
when the reward seems far away? Can you go through the pain without
seeing the reward? How patient are you?

2. LISTEN
We often want things too quickly, we say things too rashly and we don’t
listen. Before you break your commitment, shut your eyes and imagine
what the consequences will be. Listen to the wise advice from people
whose lives you admire. Listening requires you to be still and consider
your life. How well do you listen?

3. ACT ANYWAY
Be willing to do it anyway even if you don’t feel like it. Don’t be someone
who breaks their commitments because they didn’t feel like doing it. Not
having fun, getting bored, difficulties, and trials are all part of the road to
success. Do it anyway. Each time you quit, you make it easier to give up
the next time life gets hard. How good are you at doing what you say?

4. NE PLUS ULTRA
Latin meaning “utmost limit you can go”
Commitment is either total or not at all. There is no value or sense in a
partial commitment when working toward your dreams. You must decide
to give it your all.
Would “Ne plus ultra” be used to describe your commitment level?

5. TRUST
Trust your hard work will pay off. Success never comes without being
earned. Believe all your effort will not be wasted.

How much do you trust the importance of commitment?

UNHSAKABLE COURAGE...

"Fear is one of the most common
human emotions. Many people in your
school, in your hometown, and in the
world are afraid, though most would
never admit it. The goal is for you to
walk away from camp with the tools to
have unshakable courage no matter
what happens in your future."

This is the impetus for today's focus as we lead ourselves and the campers on a journey toward understanding what fear is and how it impacts our behavior. Fear is such a common emotion and yet many feign invincibility for "fear" that others might view them as weaker. Where does fear originate and why is it so powerful? We'll meet questions like these head on today as we continue to foster an unshakable core here at NBC HIU.
